What it boils down to is an inside joke between members of a group. Inside jokes serve groups well, as they increase feelings of belonging, strengthen bonds, and increase group self-esteem. But the problem with this meme, and with the setup of the social media world, is that it is an inside joke that is being shared, and reshared, and reshared with all of the people who are not a part of that ingroup. I’ve personally seen several that I think are funny, not surprisingly all which described my own identity. I’ve also seen friends of mine get irritated at the same picture, because it portrays members of the outgroup as insensitive idiots. To me, it is hilarious. To them, it is irritating.
Which is the problem with this meme. Have you seen even one that is posted by somebody who is not a part of that ingroup? Have you felt like reposting even one that didn’t describe you?
